Information for beneficiaries

What we do

We contact all recipients of grants, scholarships, project funding or postdoctoral positions by email.

The names of the recipients of prizes, scholarships and grants will be published once our Scholarly Board has decided on the award. The names are published on our website. Grants awarded from Holger Frykenstedt’s scholarship fund (for work on a master’s thesis) are also published on the Research Council of Finland website.

Note: If you have been granted funding from the Swedish Cultural Foundation, please contact the Cultural Foundation for more information.

What you do

Remember to request the funds in good time, preferably no later than three weeks before the desired payment date. Note: If you do not have a Finnish bank account, please contact forskning@sls.fi before requesting the grant.

Grants and subsidies are reserved for the recipient for one year after the applicant has received a positive decision on the grant/research funding. After the first year, the recipient may request a deferral for a maximum of one year.

The grant period may be postponed due to military service, parental or childcare leave (maximum two years), long-term illness or other compelling reasons.

Request a deferral in the application system ansokan.sls.fi or send the request for an extension to forskning@sls.fi.

Let us know if you will not use your grant or use only part of it. We will decide on a refund.

From April 2023 onwards SLS requires double signing by organisations that have been awarded a grant of at least €5,000. Note: If your organisation does not have a Finnish bank account, please contact forskning@sls.fi before requesting the grant.

Double signing is not required if the grant is awarded to an individual. Double signature or co-signature means that two people within the organisation sign the requisition. It is no longer sufficient for only one person in the organisation to sign the requisition.

It is important for SLS to know that the grants are used for the right purpose. We trust our beneficiaries and always assume that the grants are used for the purpose for which we award them. At the same time, we must do everything we can to ensure that there is no misuse and that the funds are used according to the wishes of our donors.

In this way, we want to ensure that at least two people in the organisation know the purpose of the grant and the account to which the grant is paid.

Do this

Step 1: Request for payment

To request the grant, please use the link provided in the email informing you that your grant has been awarded. Log in to our application system via the link and request payment.

Enter the contact details of the person who will co-sign the payment request. You can also write a message to the co-signer. The co-signer will see the account number, the purpose of the grant and any conditions attached to the grant.

Remember to inform the person in advance about the double signing.

Check that all information is correct before forwarding the request. The co-signer cannot edit the request.

Click “Spara och fortsätt”.

The co-signer will continue the process.

Step 2: Co-signer

The co-signer receives an automatic email from our application system containing a link to the signature. The co-signer uses their personal online banking codes or Mobile ID to sign.

The co-signer can only authorise the request. If an error is found, the person who originally made the payment request must correct the information.

Step 3: Complete the payment request

Once the co-signature is done, the initiator of the payment request will receive an email. You can then log in to our application system again to finalise the payment request.

Do you have questions about the double signature? Contact us at forskning@sls.fi.

The grants are tax-free up to the annual limit set by the tax authorities (€26,355.60, in 2024). If the recipient’s total annual grant amount exceeds the maximum tax-free limit, the recipient will be taxed on the excess amount. Grants and subsidies must be declared in the income tax return. We notify the tax authorities of all grants and subsidies awarded.

According to the Act on Pension and Accident Insurance for Grant Holders, grant recipients must take out pension and accident insurance with The Farmers’ Social Insurance Institution (Mela) . The insurance is compulsory and applies to persons residing in Finland. The premium to be paid is approximately 14% of the amount granted. The grantee takes out the insurance. We notify LPA of the grants and subsidies awarded.

All recipients of scholarships and grants must submit a report on the use of the grant within 14 months of the payment of the grant. Recipients of a master’s thesis grant are not required to submit a report.

Reminders are sent out twice after the deadline for the report. The reminder is sent to the e-mail address provided by the beneficiary or contact person in the application. If the email address changes, please notify the new email address to forskning@sls.fi.

Failure to submit a report despite reminders may affect your ability to receive new grants.

For the funds granted by SLS to be paid, the university must confirm that it accepts the researcher.

For the postdoctoral positions that SLS chooses to fund, a position agreement is concluded between the university and SLS.

One copy of both printed and digital humanities and social science monographs should be sent to the Grant Coordinator Tara Nyberg (tara.nyberg@sls.fi or PO Box 158, 00171 Helsinki).

The publication will be placed in the SLS library, which is a specialised scientific library focusing on Swedish culture in Finland with an emphasis on literature in the humanities and social sciences.

The plan is drawn up before the project or research starts in consultation with the SLS Research and Archives Unit.

Once the project has started, the project manager draws up a plan together with the SLS project manager for how the project will communicate its research and results.

How to refer to SLS in public settings

If you have been awarded a scholarship, grant or research funding

If you have been awarded a grant, or research funding from us, you must mention in presentations, on websites, and in printed and digital publications that you have been awarded a grant from SLS. You do this by using the SLS logo with the name of the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland in its entirety. If the support comes from a named fund, the name of the fund must also be mentioned according to the model sentence:

The Society of Swedish Literature in Finland has supported [Name of project/publication] with funds from [Full name of fund(s)].

If you are awarded a printing or translation grant

The published book must include the following statement, depending on the funding the book has received:

  • Published with the support of state funds distributed by the Delegation for the Promotion of Swedish Literature/Society of Swedish Literature in Finland.
  • Published with the support of the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland from Christian and Constance Westermarck’s fund.
  • Published with the support of the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland from Ingrid, Margit and Henrik Höijer’s donation fund I.
