No, you can write your application in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian or English. Applications cannot be written in Finnish, except for music and musicology (Fredrik Pacius memorial fund).

Doctoral students, PhDs, and Associate Professors (docents) can apply for research grants.

No, you should type or copy the plan into the application form and not attach a separate research plan.

The application form for a research grant should answer the question: “How will the research be related to the Swedish cultural heritage in Finland?”

For researchers, the research plan must include questions related to the Swedish language in Finland or Swedish-speaking cultural or social life in Finland. In history, the Swedish period in Finland is considered part of the Swedish cultural heritage in Finland.

The question does not need to be answered if the research concerns musicology, legal history, theology, economics, statistics, environmental management and technology.

Yes, but only if you fulfil one of these criteria:

Scholarship for students at master’s level (application in September)

Master’s-level students can only apply for Holger Frykenstedt’s scholarship fund. The subject of the thesis must be Finnish culture, Swedish 18th century or Swedish Romanticism.

Travel grant in medicine (application in September)

For travel support to successful Finland-Swedish medical students and candidates for supplementary studies or courses abroad.

Travel grant in marine technology and marine engineering (application in September)

Grants are awarded to Swedish-speaking students in marine technology or marine engineering at the level of university, other higher education institution, or college, for studies or training abroad.

Travel grant in Nordic languages at the University of Helsinki (application in September)

For students and young researchers in the field of Nordic languages who wish to visit other universities in the Nordic region, preferably Uppsala University, if the purpose of the trip is studies or research. The grant can be awarded to applicants whose mother tongue is Swedish or Finnish and who are enrolled at the University of Helsinki.

PhD students €2,400/month

Doctors €2,800/month

Doctors at associate professor (docent) level and associate professors €3,400/month

For working grants in the fields of history and documentation, music, composition and visual arts, the grant amount cannot exceed €2,800 without a well-justified reason.

A working grant can be applied for a minimum of six months and a maximum of four years. Check the call for proposals to see how long you can apply for a grant.

Spring grants (February round) are usually decided in the second half of April.

Autumn grants (September round) are usually decided in the second half of November.

Decisions are made by the SLS Scholarly Board.

You can choose whether you want the grant to be paid in one or more instalments.

After the grant decision has been sent, you have one year to request the grant. After one year, you can request a one-year deferral in the application system or by e-mail to forskning@sls.fi.

1 January is a public holiday, and no payments are made then. The grant can be paid on 2 January and, depending on your bank, it usually takes a few banking days for the grant to appear in your account.

SLS owns and manages the Swedish Cultural Foundation’s funds, and payments are made via SLS.

However, SLS and the Swedish Cultural Foundation are separate organisations and have separate application forms and separate decision-making processes. If you have any questions about the grant, please contact the Swedish Cultural Foundation.
